Cleaning upholstery

Cleaning upholstery“spills are an everyday occurance, and we all have ways of dealing with them. We have put together some of the best ways we have found of dealing with these incidents. This information is provided in good faith and ment as guidence only…for any major spill or stain we would recommend professional cleaning”.

In all cases remove excess spillage as quickly as possible using a clean white absorbent cloth or paper roll. Blot the stained area so that the fabric is as dry as possible. Always use a dabbing rather than a rubbing action. Using a rubbing action can abrade the fabric surface of your upholstery and cause roughened or pilled patches

Removing oil based stains- fabric

  1. If the spill is solid or semi-solid (like butter) remove the excess by gently lifting it off with a blunt knife.
  2. Blot.
  3. Dab on methylated spirits, but do not apply spirit directly, use cotton wool or a soft cloth or use a recognised brand of upholstery cleaner.
  4. Blot.

Repeat stages 3 and 4 until stain disappears, or there is no further improvement.

Removing water based stains- fabric

  • Blot
  • Dab on a dilute solution of upholstery shampoo.
  • Blot.
  • Dab on clean, warm water.
  • Blot.

Repeat stages 2 and 5 until stain disappears, or there is no further improvement.

Note: Always blot thoroughly to leave the fabric as dry as possible. Dab on diluted upholstery shampoo and clean warm water as sparingly as possible and be careful not to spread the stain.

General day to day care- Leather

In a normal domestic environment leather furniture doesn’t need specialist care. But like any furniture it should be kept clean and free from dirt and grime which can act as an abrasive and cause the leather to wear or fade more quickly. Direct heat from fires and radiators should be avoided, as should strong direct sunlight, as these too will cause the leather to fade more quickly.

  • Vacuum, brush or dust regularly
  • Avoid all household cleaning products for any use on leather. These will build up an unpleasant sticky feel to the leather
  • Light scratches and marks can be polished and rubbed out with a clean dry cloth. Do not rub too hard
  • Dust and light dirt or grime can be taken off with a damp cloth
  • Do not soak the leather at any time while cleaning
  • Spills and Spot Cleaning
Water-based spills should be dabbed off the leather with a soft cloth or absorbent kitchen roll and allowed to dry for 3-4 days. Then if still visible it can be gently rubbed and polished with a clean dry cloth.
  • Oil-based spills and stubborn marks can be treated with a solution of mild pure soap, eg Lux Soap Flakes, then rinsed with clean water. Do not soak the leather.
  • Allow to dry for 3-4 days. Some oil-based spills will disappear into the leather over the following months.
